Summary: Shelly J. Lane, PhD, OTR is a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her pilot study is one of the first to be conducted that attempts to untangle differences between SPD, ADHD and ASD using both behavioral parent report measures and laboratory testing. Hear her describe the importance of double gating procedures for diagnostic verification, results of physiological laboratory procedures, and preliminary report of similarities and differences in sensory symptoms across diagnostic groups. Presenter: Shelly J. Lane, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, is a professor for the department of Occupational Therapy at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Director of the Sensory Integration and Stress Evaluation (SPASE) Lab for sensory processing and stress evaluation, and Director of Post Professional Education for the Department of Occupational Therapy. Dr. Lane is presently directing the work of one masters’ theses, two masters’ research projects, and five dissertations. Dr. Lane received a B.S. in Occupational Therapy from The Ohio State University and her PhD in Anatomy with emphasis in Neurosciences at the University of Texas Health Sciences at San Antonio. In 1984 she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in neurophysiology at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of California. Dr. Lane has engaged in aspects of pediatric occupational therapy practice, education and scholarship for over 35 years, focusing on sensory integration and processing in children with disabilities, as well as neuroscience applications in occupational therapy. Dr. Lane speaks locally, nationally, and internationally on topics related to these interests. Her current activities include research in the SPASE Lab on differential diagnosis of sensory modulation diagnosis, a study funded by the Wallace Research Foundation and supported in part by the Center for Clinical and Translational Research at VCU, NIH NCRR award UL1RR031990. Dr. Lane has edited, authored and contributed to books addressing issues related to sensory integration and processing, neuroscience applications to practice, and pediatric occupational therapy practice. She has published empirical research and descriptive manuscripts in journals both within and outside the profession. In 2007 Dr. Lane served as guest editor for the March/April AJOT, devoted to work on sensory integration and processing.
